Everything is Opening!

Mariah Strongin, Tribeca, NY

My boyfriend Jason Ienner and I had an early birthday date night Friday night at a restaurant for the first time since quarantine. We had a really great time and some delicious cocktails, but I couldn’t believe how we both filled up on apps before we even got to our amazing tacos. We asked the waitress to bag the entree to take the entree home.

Filling up on apps hasn’t happened to Jason and I in a LONG time. So, it got me thinking — a lot of people probably don’t know why they fill up so quickly on apps when they go out. There are a few reasons this can happen, for example ingredients and the fact that we have stayed in and cooked ourselves for months, but it mostly has a lot to do with the spacing out of meals.

Eating slower gives your leptin a chance to tell your brain that you’re full. It is difficult to eat past that point and, if you do, your leptin rises and will wait longer in the future to tell your brain that your stomach is full. As you can imagine, this can lead to binging, overeating, and weight gain. If you feel you are struggling with any of these, check your eating speed.

Another benefit of eating slower, it gives your body time to absorb the vitamins and nutrients it needs.

I say this all the time, but our bodies are so delicate so don’t forget to check in with yours. We have to recognize when our bodies are trying to tell us something.

One other thing: enjoy going back out, but be safe and carry hand sanitizer. 🙂

Lastly, support local restaurants. We ate at Oxomoco in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY.

      Natalie,

I tried not to focus on the weight as it can vary so much and isn’t super accurate. When I came to the realization that I was not healthy, I just tried to start eating more nutritious meals one at a time, once my trainer knew I was eating enough he started lightly training me. Eventually my hair and nails started to grow back stronger, that was a sure sign I was on my way. 🙂

      Hi Milly,

I try to chew my food because it helps digestion. I also am bad at it, but I try to eat slow so that I don’t overeat and get super uncomfortably full haha. What about you?
