My Secret to Overall Body Success

Mariah Strongin, New York, NY (I’ve just moved back after three months)

What my clients and myself do to lose weight might shock you….

We eat.  Yes, I know it sounds crazy that feeding the body correctly makes you lose weight, but it does. The body is like a plant, you have to clean it up to encourage it to flourish. The more you encourage your body with whole foods, the better your relationship with your body will be. You make it feel good and, in turn, it makes you feel good.

I have a client who, pre-COVID, was a wrestler. If you don’t know much about the sport, like any weight based sport boxing etc, the competitors have to weigh in at around the same particular weight range (i.e. the 120-lb level, 130-lb level, etc.). If they don’t, they don’t get to compete. Sounds a bit like the modeling industry, where maintaining your body type and size is necessary for consistent clients.

Instinctually, my model beliefs about cutting weight were the same as my wrestler client’s — to starve and sweat.  But how do you stay strong enough to work or compete all day while making a certain weight and not destroying your energy?

Well, you eat. If you have always taught your body that to lose weight it must starve, when most likely you weren’t giving it enough nutrients before anyways, not only will you be likely to have no energy and be at risk for health issues, but your body will say “no” to you at some point.

Instead, think about it this way: if you are already eating correct portion sizes for your body type, eating regular meals, drinking enough water, getting enough exercise, and getting enough sleep/recovery, it is way easier and more reliable to change around what already is a balanced body if you have an upcoming shoot or competition. At least then your body has the nourishment it needs and is encouraged to listen to you. Everyone’s reactions to change are different.  Take women and men for example, women have hormones that can be put in danger when the diet is changing too much and it may take them more time to make changes. Age is another great example, the older you get the slower your body will react. That said, if treated properly throughout life, it is more likely to respond better. It is all about building your relationship with your body.

Not everyone needs to compete and I’m sure most people yearn for competitive athletics — you wont see me running a marathon anytime soon — and that is 100% ok. But I’m still in a body that I need to treat correctly and understand better. In return, our bodies function better, have more energy than ever, and use what they need and get rid of what they don’t.

Reading between the lines:

All bodies need a structure, a schedule, and a good relationship with the person living in them.

My hope here is that you take that knowledge and start asking questions, heck, do it below in comments. Every client I have has lost weight by simply understanding portion sizes particular for their bodies and for a few of them that was enough. They lost the weight they wanted to, and they feel better overall. We didn’t eliminate any of their favorite foods, we simply gave their bodies a schedule and everything it needed to function. Works like a charm.
